This blog is used to provide an update on Rose Purser Montgomery. She had a heart attack Thursday, July 9, 2009. She is currently in the hospital and is recovering nicely. Here's a brief history of events (very brief)...
Friday, 7/10/09
She was taken to the hospital Thursday (July 9), late afternoon with chest pains. While there she suffered a heart attack. They tried angioplasties but was only able to clear one of the blockages. She had triple bypass surgery during the night. She is currently in ICU and is on a ventilator, has a heart pump, and an external pacemaker. She is alert and able to write us notes. She complains of being hot. The temperature in her room is 55 degrees plus she is having cold wash clothes (dipped in ice water) on her forehead. Jackie is traveling back from North Carolina. Connie, Wayne, Randy, and Debbie are all at the hospital with her--visiting during visiting hours.

Jackie arrived about noon. She continues on the ventilator and heart pump and still complains that she is hot. You could hang meat in the room (55 degrees). She is becoming tired of the ventilator and all the hoses.
Sunday, 7/12/09
No significant change. She continues with heart pump, external pacemaker, and ventilator.
Monday, 7/13/09
The heart pump and external pacemaker were removed. She continues in ICU. Debbie returned home to take care of some appointments, etc. but will return Wed, 7/15.
Tuesday, 7/14/09
Finally, the ventilator is removed. Her throat is so sore, she is very "horse." She has developed some bronchitis in her lungs and an antibiotic was started.
Wednesday, 7/15/09
Debbie returned about noon and Jackie left to return back to work. Wayne left also. She is improving greatly since the ventilator has been removed. About 6:30pm she is moved to a regular room but encountered problems with staff change over. It was a long night of coughing, trying to get staff assistance, etc. Had to have several "breathing treatments" during the night to help with the congestion.
Thursday, 7/16/09
After a very long night, she finally started breathing better. She was able to have the oxygen discontinued and walked down the hall with the rehabilitation staff. She is now talking about when she can go home. Her voice is good and she has a good appetite. They are talking about possibly going home Saturday if she continues improving.
I'll post updates on this blog as I can. Once she gets home, I'll have her (or Ann) start posting updates. (Oh Ann is coming Monday, 7/20/09, evening to help out for a few weeks. I've set up a wireless network at the house so she can use a laptop to read mail, etc.

ReplyDeleteWe had a good night except for the perky nurse who came in at 5am flipping on the lights telling us good morning in a loud voice. No one else came around until 7am. Mom is doing good. Chest xray showed less fluid on lungs. She is able to sit up in bed without assistance and walk a few feet to chair and bathroom. She will probably be released either Sat or Sunday
